Our work in Tanzania

Childreach International works with local communities within the Kilimanjaro region of Tanzania and has been directly implementing initiatives to develop primary and further education since 2004.

Our country office, Childreach International Tanzania, opened in April 2009 and is led by local staff who have valuable experience working with local communities. They understand the most pressing local needs and remain close to project sites. Childreach International Tanzania works closely with our UK office and the local communities, to ensure that Childreach International meets their most vital needs

Childreach International Tanzania is directly implementing three programmes; Vocational Training Centres, School Improvement Programme and a Carbon Offsetting Programme.

Our Projects

Vocational Training Centres

The aim of the programme is to provide technical skills to children who had no access to secondary/college education through vocational training. The Vocational Training Centres develop the potential of vulnerable and socially excluded youths through the provision of training in skills such as carpentry, tailoring, IT, Maths, and Basic English, which enables them to more easily find employment and to play an active role in society.

“I joined Mahida VTC so that I may be able to get a job and support myself. Childreach International has helped me grow intellectually and it has put me in a better position to get a job when I graduate.  I hope to work with another tailor when I finish in November this year. If not, I would like to form a group and be given machines by Childreach International. I want to start up a business with the other graduates.”

School Improvement Programme

Tanzania is among many developing countries which fight against illiteracy. To tackle this problem the government established a program of improving primary education in order to allow education for all. The programme focuses on building teacher’s houses, building school classrooms and encouraging parents to enrol school-age children in primary school. This programme has been very successful; about 90% of school-age children have enrolled in primary school each year, and at least every ward has one primary school.

Childreach International has funded renovations to six government primary schools to enable school children study in a comfortable and safe environment. The programme will help primary schools in rural areas, where the situation is worse so as to protect children with common diseases such as diarrhoea, infections, cholera and also to make a school safe and attractive place for children to go. Through this programme children will be motivated to attend school which will reduce absenteeism and school drop-out rates.

“My school used to be in a bad condition. The toilets were in bad shape, the classroom floors were broken and the kitchen was very basic, it was made of mud and timber. Childreach International has constructed a kitchen and toilets and renovated the classrooms so now I study in a good environment. When I grow up I want to be a doctor, as I want to save lives”.

Carbon Offsetting in Tanzania

Childreach International conducts Futurebuilding and Challenge Events throughout the world to raise funds for projects. The Carbon Offsetting programme is a tree planting programme in Tanzania to offset the carbon emissions from flights for our projects to remain carbon neutral and avoid increasing environmental degradation.
