Childreach International has worked in Savelugu/Nanton District in Ghana since 2008 in partnership with Community Centre for Sustainable Development (CCSD). CCSD and Childreach International have since merged to create Childreach International Ghana, which opened in June 2009.
Ghana's education system, particularly in rural areas, faces many problems. According to the 2005 Educational Sector Performance Report, many classrooms in the country are overcrowded and a number of them are in unsatisfactory physical conditions . The overall enrolment level in Savelugu/Nanton District is from 35% to 52%. Childreach Ghana are working on 3 programmes; Teaching Assistant Programme, School Farm Programme and School Improvement Pilot Programme. Our projects aim to increase enrolment rates and maintain enrolment levels.
-
The Teaching Assistants Programme funds 60 volunteers to provide extra support and skills to teachers and students in 35 schools in the Savelugu and Nanton Districts. The aim is to increase school enrolment rates by providing teaching assistants in areas where often 5 classes share 1 teacher between them.
-
The School Farm Programme provides seed and fertiliser to 15 schools to enable them to provide crops which in turn provides food and a sustainable income for children and staff. Research shows that school attendance rates increase when food is provided.
-
The School Renovation Pilot began in August 2009 at Kpano School in Savelungu/Nanton district to renovate classrooms and build a playground to provide children with a more child-friendly school environment and maintain enrolment levels.
