Education
We've been helping to improve children's access to education around the world since 2004, working to encourage school enrollment and bring about a safer, more enjoyable learning environment for children. Our projects are run in cooperation with local communities and project partners, who understand the most pressing local needs. The very children who's education we are helping to improve are also included in the entire process, meaning that our projects are tailored to their specific needs.
We currently support educational programmes in Tanzania, India & Nepal - take a look at some of the examples of what we do below:
Tanzania
School Improvement Programme
My school used to be in a bad condition. Childreach International has built us a new kitchen and renovated the classrooms. Now I study in a good environment.
Joseph, 12 Uwa Primary School
Our programme in the Kilimanjaro region focuses on building and renovating classrooms and school facilities such as kitchens and toilet blocks.
To date we have helped fun renovations to 27 schools, and with our programme working in many rural areas, the improvements we fund go towards making local schools a safer, cleaner, and more attractive environment to learn in. This helps to boost the numbers of children enrolled in school and reduce the number of absentees and drop-outs.
Vocational Training Centres
The aim of this programme is to provide technical skills to children who have had no access to secondary or college education through Vocational Training Centres. The centres develop the potential of vulnerable or socially excluded youths, teaching them skills such as carpentry, tailoring, IT, maths and basic English. These skills enable them to more easily find employment, allowing them to play an active role in society.
Nepal
School Improvement Programme
Childreach International's Nepal based office registered as a local NGO under Childreach Nepal in April 2010, and since then has gone on to help the renovation of a number of schools in various communities. One such school is Yangrima, which was forced to close for ten years as a result of the country's civil war. With the support of Childreach Nepal, Yangrima school re-opened in 2010, giving back to the local community the school they had lost due to conflict. The first year of the project has been an oustanding success, attracting a much higher number of pupils than anticipated. Families are also returning to the area with a new sense of optimism that the local area will become the thriving community it was before the civil war.
India
Child Development & Empowerment
Education isn't confined to the classroom, and our project partner in India, Shaishav, runs an innovative child development and empowerment programme called Balsena. Balsena is a children's collective which gives a platform to children to voice their concerns and needs. Holding monthly meetings, the children are able to come together and find solutions to problems they face at home or in their communties. The programme aims to train child leaders in the Bhavnagar district of Gujarat, who will then pass on their learned knowledge and skills, providing the programme with a sustainable platform.
