Development Action Society

Project Partner: Development Action Society (DAS)
Location: Kolkata, West Bengal, India
Working with: 70 children, 30 women and 30 stakeholders

Development Action Society (DAS) is working with urban migrant workers and tribal groups who are living on just over $1 a day in the Bantala and Kantala areas in Kolkata.

The project's mission is centred on child rights, with the aim to educate women and mothers on child rights issues and strengthen their role as care givers.  By offering this support to women, DAS are transforming the way in which child rights issues and violations are dealt with within these communities.

Mobilising and sensitising children and local stake holders, including teachers and health workers, has led to the creation of Children Action Groups (CAG). The groups offer the children a platform from which they can voice their problems and work with the community to effectively solve them, as well as alert the community to any known violations of their rights.

Taking a holistic approach to development, DAS also actively encourages children to enrol and remain in formal schooling, using household visits and attendance tracking.

Our continued support for DAS’s efforts will ensure children’s rights in Kolkata are realised, valued and upheld.
