Child Rights and Protection Print E-mail

Empowering children by promoting child rights and child protection is a major priority for Childreach International.

In India Childreach International works with Shaishav on an innovative programme called Balsena. Demonstrating Childreach International's commitment to child-centred development, it is a truly unique initiative that promotes child rights through the use of a young persons' union. In India where inequality and discrimination is widespread, children find it difficult to express themselves and find solutions to their problems. In particular, Dalit children (Untouchables) are more likely to drop out of school early (particularly girls), to be bonded into labour, to be married early or become street children.

Balsena's work, founded, on a belief of equality and unity for all, regardless of gender, caste, class and religion, has 3500 members who work together to solve the problems they face with the support of the Shaishav team.

Nepal struggles with an ingrained social stigma surrounding sexual abuse where many believe it to be a punishment for a previous life and as a result the majority of cases remain hidden or ignored. Childreach International is supporting Antardristi as they attempt to combat this by educating the community and providing residential counselling care for children who have suffered from abuse.
