Providing a clean and safe environment for children to learn in is a key theme of Childreach International's work in Tanzania, Ghana and India. Primary education has only recently been made free in these countries therefore they are struggling to accommodate high enrolment rates.

In rural Tanzania and Ghana, there are inadequate facilities to clean water, toilets and large enough classrooms to accommodate rising numbers of children. Childreach is working in partnership with government primary schools and communities to improve the infrastructure of these schools and offer a better environment to learn. This is to motivate school attendance, reduce absenteeism and school drop-out rates, and improve educational attainment.

In India, about 70 million children receive no schooling, and more than a third of the population is illiterate. Only this year a Right to Education Bill was passed for primary school children. We have launched a School Improvement Project in primary schools in Jharkhand, where the literacy rate is only 54%, to help tackle this problem.
