![]() In Bangladesh in recent years, there have been increased numbers of Bangladeshi children being trafficked into India and other countries. The Jessore and Shatkira regions remain a major source and destination of trafficked children and women due to the geographic coverage and speed with which traffickers can operate.
In 2010 Childreach International partnered with Bangladesh Integrated Social Advancement programme (BISAP) to implement a ‘Community based movement to prevent child trafficking’ project. The project is reducing the incidences of child and women trafficked through the Jessore and Shatkira borders in Bangladesh. Its innovative approach forms multi sectoral watch groups at the grassroots level to prevent and reduce the incidences of trafficking in these border areas.
BISAP organises teacher training, children leaders training, and advocacy and awareness raising groups. Anti-trafficking awareness training is helping to raise the awareness among children in the area. Now more children are fully aware about trafficker’s techniques to influence and motivate children to go with them.
![]() Deputy Commissioner, Jessore, Bangladesh “Every year mainly women and children are frequently trafficked. People do not report cases of trafficking. Illiteracy rate is very high and trafficking is often consensual; even parents or husbands sell off their children/wives. We need them to make a complaint before we can take action, but the victims do not”.
