children learn maths with one of ASHA's rural self help groups

Project Partner: Association for Social and Human Awareness (ASHA)
Location: Twenty villages of the Saraikela District and Khunti in the State of Jharkhand
Working with: 100 children and 200 people

ASHA is an innovative rural development project working alongside over 100 children to improve their access to education and health care.

Situated in the fragile region in the north eastern state of Jharkhand, ASHA and the local communities have faced many obstacles including a persistent threat from local militia, making access to even basic services difficult.

Another obstacle is discrimination against groups based on their caste. Despite caste discrimination being illegal in India it is still a practice that persists.

With the support of Childreach International, ASHA is working hard to overcome these problems by effectively engaging communities in numerous education and health care projects.

ASHA has established 20 self-help groups within communities. These provide education and health care to women and children in the surrounding area. These self-help groups have held health check- ups for adolescent girls and awareness-raising street theatre performances.

Have a look at some of the pictures below to see the self-help groups in action.
