For over five years now we've been renovating schools in Tanzania and have worked with local communities, fundraisers from the UK and local councils to renovate over 10 schools.

Our most recent renovation was Jipe Primary School, where all the school’s classrooms have been completely renovated. The school, which was opened on the 22nd June 2011, is another great example of how transforming school facilities makes a huge difference to the children in the local communities.

Donkeys disrupted lessons

Sangija Julius, a 13 year old student at Jipe describes the school before the renovation

“The roof of our classroom was very old and rusty with so many holes where birds built their nests; classrooms were dark with cracked walls and very unattractive”.

The rooms were very dark due to lack of windows and doors. Because there were no doors, cattle like goats, cows and donkeys disrupted lessons, breaking desks and leaving manure behind.

Health risks

Before the renovation started the school was in poor condition and was a health risk to the children. Wind would blow swarms of dust into the classrooms and the children breathed it in.

“I was always ill; I coughed constantly due to the dusty floor in my classroom and lack of windows”.

"I want to improve my level of understanding"

This has all changed since its renovation.

Now the children can concentrate on their studies.

“The renovation has made me look at education more positively as I want to improve my level of understanding and academic performance”,
says Sangija.

The renovation has not only had a positive effect on the health of the children, it has also given them a fresh outlook on learning and encouraged them to reach their full potential.

The bright colours on the outside of the school are inviting and the children look forward to coming to school to start learning.

“Our school is now a much better environment to study in; I enjoy coming to school more than I used to before the renovation. Even the teachers are more enthusiastic and arrive on time and are motivated to teach. "
Latifah explained

The changes to the school have had a massive effect on the children in the Jipe community, who are now able to study in a safe environment.
