“This was the first Universal Children’s Day at Yangrima School since it re-opened last year. We celebrated with 10 teachers, 134 students and other staff. The celebration turned out to be a big day for the Yangrima family. Our teachers remarked the day as a hugely joyful day.” -Tashi Lama, Yangrima Trust In September, Yangrima School - which was recently renovated by Childreach International – began celebrations to mark Universal Children’s Day. Yangrima School, located in the rural village of Sermathang, Nepal, was officially re-opened (pictured top) in March this year after civil war forced its closure in 2001. Our “School Improvement Programme” sent volunteers from UK Company, Sage, to repair the crumbling school buildings and provide children the opportunity to return to school in the remote mountain village. "The songs and jokes never ended!" Their Universal Children’s Day – a celebration which recognises the importance of child rights - started with presentations by staff, which taught pupils about the difficulties faced by children all over the world. This was followed by an eagerly awaited football match, which saw 134 students split into 4 different groups, go head to head in a competitive, tiring, but enjoyable game. Performance and dance were next on the agenda. The talents of the students shone through, singing songs, telling jokes and performing group dances. By now it was tea time. All the children joined in assembly for songs and to reflect on an incredible start to their Universal Children’s Day celebrations, the children’s first in their newly opened school. “We planned to conclude the program after tea but amazingly, the songs and jokes never ended!” Check out our slideshow, showing the Sage's renovation work to Yangrima school.
