Looking back on 2010: Six volunteers and Mwanda School Print E-mail

As the year comes to a close, we look back at some of the incredible partnerships forged and project work done in 2010.

Here’s just one example of a brilliant project and the committed individuals who got involved. From October to September, six volunteers travelled to Mwanda Primary School in Tanzania. The school, which provides education to 261 pupils, was in need of renovation work. The volunteers concentrated their efforts on the nursery buildings (pictured below prior to renovation), fence construction, classroom decoration and repair to the play ground facilities.

mixedfb5Day one & two: Volunteers began the fencing around the school, cutting pegs, digging holes and measuring out using the materials.

mixedfb1Day three: Today was all about mixing concrete, and a lot of it. This was challenging work for the volunteers but with help from local Fundi (labourers) they eventually mixed enough to erect the fence.

mixedfbDay four: The fence was gradually put together, piece by piece.

Day six and seven: The entire group concentrated on finishing the paint work to the classroom, both inside and out.

mixedfb7Day eight: On their final day working, volunteers painted wonderful murals inside the classrooms while local fundi worked on repairing the playground.

mixedfb8Day nine: Farewell! All six volunteers celebrated the success of the project with the local community!
