Ashley Farrell, Student Fundraising Manager for Childreach International, answered our quick fire, 60 second interview, about his recent experience climbing the highest mountain in Africa as part of our Challenge Event, Climb Kilimanjaro 4 Kids.

Which Challenge event did you do?


What were your first impressions as you arrived in Tanzania?

Unbelievable! I’ll never forget driving towards Moshi and seeing the mountain above the clouds for the first time and thinking I’m going to be climbing to the top of that!

Who made a lasting impression on you in Tanzania?

Sheila, the in-country Operations Manager was a real inspiration for me and really informative on the projects.

What project did you visit?

Mriti Primary School.

What did you do there?

We were given a presentation by the headmaster of the school who was really excited because they had just developed a new computer room with the support of Childreach International. We also had a great time playing football and dancing with the children.

What were the children like at the project?

The school children were amazing, their dancing and rhythm was awesome – much better than ours!

Which part of the trek was most challenging?

The last night was the toughest!

Which part was the most incredible?

Reaching the summit, daylight began to break, and it was the most amazing, awe-inspiring feeling.

What was the mood like when you reached the top?

Over-joyed! And massive group-hugging!

How did you feel when you reached the top?

Relieved, elated, knackered...

What was the highlight of the trip overall?

Reaching the top of the highest free-standing mountain in the world as the sun rose was an absolutely unforgettable experience.

What challenge event would you like to do next?

Definitely cycling through the foothills of the Himalaya! India on 2 Wheels here I come!

Why should someone take part in a challenge event?

Because they are the best way to raise money for a great cause, meet wonderful people, broaden your horizons and visit some of the most beautiful countries in the world. They are amazing and everyone should definitely do at least one of these events!
