BISAP, our anti trafficking project partner in Bangladesh, recently received the good news that a young girl was rescued from a gang of child traffickers and safely returned home, thanks to their awareness raising work in the region.
Farzana, just 14 years old from the Satkhira District in Bangladesh, had been abducted by a gang and taken from her home town. After remembering the phone number for the abduction help line from one of the awareness raising sessions, she informed the watch committee about her situation. Community Facilitator Mahbubur Rahman contacted the police and together they were able to locate and successfully rescue the girl.
Despite her ordeal, Farzana is optimistic about the future. When asked about her future plans, Farzana replied, “I want to continue my studies to become a teacher so that I can educate more children about the real dangerous of child and women trafficking”.
Back at School
Farzana is back at school and now lives with her grandmother (pictured right). When asked what role the community had played in helping rescue her granddaughter, the grandmother replied:
“The community have been a huge support to us. Everyone has got involved and worked hard to find Farzana and bring her safely home to me. I thank for local police for their good work. I am so happy, I thought I had lost my granddaughter forever but now she is back with me.”
Anti trafficking awareness
Childreach International began its partnership with BISAP in 2010, working on a project to implement a community based movement to prevent child trafficking. The project is reducing the incidences of child and women trafficked through the Jessore and Shatkira borders in Bangladesh, where child trafficking is a real and persistent threat to women and children in the region.
BISAP works with the local community, schools and the police to form multi sectoral watch groups at the grassroots level to prevent and reduce the incidences of trafficking in high risk areas such as at the borders. They also run watch committees and operate a help line that can be used by the community or children if they witness anything suspicious, or if they think they are at risk of being trafficked themselves. It was this help line that saved Farzana.
