Chandra Yogal, 28, Co-ordinator of Community Health Programme

“Many children are malnourished because parents don’t have time to feed children, they go to the field early, so there is no time to cook. No time to care for children."

Chandra advises teachers to speak to the parents to explain the importance of nutrition.

"Parents don’t know the nutritional value of local food and buy manufactured foods instead, many of which are past their expiry date.  This leads to diarrhoea and other health complications."

But it's not just the parents that play an active role in spreading the health care message.

“A paramedic is contacted by students when they have health problems. Treatment is offered for free.  He then advises teachers to alert them as soon as a child is sick so as to prevent them from getting worse.  Child health clubs are also referring ill children to doctors/teachers.  They also disseminate the lessons they learn in health training to other pupils in school.  Topics include oral hygiene and infectious diseases.  They record health problems and review them.  They meet once a month”.
